E tū hei toa Reo Māori - Be a champion of Te Reo Māori, was designed for anyone who loves Te Reo Māori and help champion our language whether you know one or two words in Te Reo or fluent.
The more people we have championing Te Reo Māori the better.
We are grateful to Josh Hurae at Ukaipō Arts for collaborating with us and bringing our design to life and also the team at Ōkupu for helping us ensure our Te Māori is on point!
Below is a bit of information about our design.
The little notches are Kape they can be represented as baskets of knowledge. We have 12 Kape representing the 12 heavens. They speak of baskets of whānau, similar to nests ”Te puna ō te Mātauranga”. There is always one person that holds on to all the knowledge that usually your whānau look towards, often elderly kaumātua, that’s what represents Kape.
We have the koru and the Mangopare, that often represents perseverance and strength so when times get tough we look to our Mangopare. The whakatauki for Mangopare is;
“Kaua e mate wheke, me mate Ururoa” Do not die like an octopus die like a hammer-head shark.
As Māori we believe that dying of honor is more honorable then dying with no mana.
The thin lines by the Mangopare are called haehae lines, lacerations within the skin and they represents whakapapa. If we look at our language it's come from someone and it's been passed down through the generations and still to this day a living language that was said to be instinct but now more than ever is thriving because of you.
We hope you can wear this with pride knowing a little bit about our design.
