My name is Hana Kopa-whiu
I was born and raised in Te Taitokerau.
I have always been passionate about Maori Arts and crafts. I was first introduced to making korowai when I attended Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Kaikohe. Here I learnt how to prepare, design and create my own korowai using mop string, muka (flax fibers), native feathers and Miro (sewing string). I was fortunate enough to have had one of the best korowai teachers and i left school with the skills and knowledge that has enabled me to make beautiful creative korowai today. Over the years I begun making contemporary Korowai for family and friends, then it grew into a small business called Ahurei Collection. Ahurei means Unique, and I believe that every piece I Create is special, sometimes personalised and unique. Even though they are not traditionally weaved the way our tupuna/Kuia made them, I believe they provide and serve the same purpose and are equally as unique as a traditional korowai. The material used is 100% Poplin, the feathers are synthetic feathers that are imported from overseas. I chose not to use native feathers as New Zealand custom clearance would not allow shipping out of the country. And the taniko used are New Zealand made. These contemporary Korowai are suitable for any occasion and can be customized to suit you.
