Te Whai
Whai is the Māori word for sting-ray. They are believed to be kaitiaki or guardians of the ocean. They dwell on the bottom of the ocean floor, with their eyes fixed at the top of their head, watching from below and protecting the areas where shellfish and fish are caught.
